Description of the project 'Wings of the Family' (in Ukrainian):
The Secret of Seven Generations: Why Knowing Your Ancestors Matters
Do you know who your ancestors were? What their names were, what kind of lives they lived? If you were asked to fill in your family tree right now, how many generations could you recall?
Practice shows that 90% of people struggle to remember the names of their great-grandparents and, unfortunately, can say very little about their lives. Ideally, a person should know their ancestors up to the seventh generation!
It’s no coincidence that the word “family” symbolizes unity (in Ukrainian, “rodyna” can be interpreted as “seven” and “I”). The tradition of knowing and honoring one’s ancestors was well known to previous generations but has been largely forgotten today.
We’ve lost the understanding of why this matters and what it’s for, and so we’ve stopped taking an interest in our roots. Yet our lives depend on it! It’s no coincidence that ancestral memory is represented as a family tree. The trunk symbolizes us, the leaves are our children, and the roots are our ancestors.
Now imagine that you have grown a large and healthy family, and your tree looks strong and powerful. But you know almost nothing about your ancestors and have never taken an interest in them. What kind of roots would such a tree have? Weak, small, lifeless. When a storm comes, they won’t be able to hold the tree in the ground or protect it from bad weather. The same happens in life.
If a person is not interested in the past and doesn’t even understand why they need to know their ancestors, they lose the support and strength of their lineage—a force that can sometimes save entire lives. But simply knowing is not enough. If someone has poor relationships with their parents or grandparents, the flow of ancestral energy becomes blocked.
Resentment, anger, and hatred not only prevent this life force from nourishing us but can also transform it into something negative and destructive. You’ve probably heard of generational curses. That’s why it’s so important to restore relationships with loved ones if they are still alive, or to forgive them if they have passed away. By thinking of them kindly, we restore the ancestral channel through which they nourish us with energy.
The seven generations of a person symbolize seven energy centers—chakras. Each generation shapes specific aspects of our lives:
First generation (you)
Second generation (parents – 2 people): form the body, health, and pass on family patterns
Third generation (grandparents – 4 people): responsible for intellect, abilities, and talents
Fourth generation (great-grandparents – 8 people): guardians of harmony, joy, and material well-being
Fifth generation (great-great-grandparents – 16 people): responsible for safety in life
Sixth generation (ancestors before them – 32 people): ensure connection with traditions. These 32 individuals are symbolically linked to our 32 teeth—each tooth connected to an ancestor. If you have dental issues, it is believed you should restore your connection with your ancestors and honor them
Seventh generation (earlier ancestors – 64 people): responsible for the country, city, and home we live in
If you break down the number 64, you get: 6 + 4 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1 — returning again to the first generation. In this way, the circle of seven generations is complete.
I wish you bright memories and peace in your heart! Irina F.
